“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education”
Shivaji College is proud to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee Year in 2020-2021. This old and great institution has achieved many milestones over decades. This is a significant achievement for a college that had its humble beginnings in the village Matiala in 1961, when it was founded by renowned social activist and farmer-leader, the Hon’ble Dr. Panjab Rao Deshmukh. His vision was to provide an educational experience that ensured holistic development of an individual. The Government of Delhi took the trusteeship of Shivaji College into its possession and relocated it to Karampura in 1967. Shivaji College was further shifted to the present campus in Raja Garden in 1976.
The Inaugural Lecture for the Diamond Jubilee was organised on October 30, 2020, where the honourable Chief Guest, Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar, Vice Chancellor, JNU, delivered a talk on ‘Self Reliant India’. The Guest of Honour was Prof. P.C. Joshi, Pro Vice- Chancellor, Delhi University.
In the same event, the college also launched SPACE (Shivaji Platform for Academic Connect and Empowerment), a state-of-the-art digital platform for efficient record- keeping, data management and stakeholder engagement.
The Diamond Jubilee event encapsulated multiple causes of celebration. Shivajians rejoiced in the transformation of the college and its numerous achievements that deserve accolades. Moreover, in its landmark year, Shivaji College also faced the biggest challenge since its inception, as the country found itself in the midst of COVID-19 outbreak and a complete lockdown. Far from bending to the crisis, the college fought the battle bravely. With virtual classrooms, online e-resources, webinars, online counselling facilities for mental health and regular meetings, the students, faculty and administrative body joined hands in unity and determination…and prevailed.
In continuance of these celebrations, a Webinar was organised on November 30, 2020 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee year and a talk by Professor Rakesh Bhatnagar, Vice- Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University entitled 'Good Quality Early Education is the First Step Towards Transforming India’.
For us Shivajians, the Diamond Jubilee Year speaks volumes. that we never wavered from our belief in the need for knowledge and light in the darkest of hours.
Over more than half a century, Shivaji College has always remained true and pure to its motto Amritam Tu Vidya and to the belief in the embodiment of true education:
विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयाद् याति पात्रताम्।
पात्रत्वाद्धनमाप्नोति धनाद्धर्मं ततः सुखम्॥
In the above series a Webinar was also organised on February 25, 2021. Dr. V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi delivered a lecture on the title 'Education, research and innovation in the 21st century : The changing role of academic institutions.'
