Botany Society: FRAGRANCE

The Botanical Society "Fragrance" is one of the most active societies of the College. It has organised state and national level conference wherein eminent scientists across the country have delivered lectures. It has also conducted competitions and activities for students that are aimed at developing the aptitude and practical knowledge of students in not only botanical sciences but also in various other aspects. The Society organises botanical excursions every year to apprise the students of flora in nearby and other reputed locations.

Release of the Book

Department of Botany, Shivaji College, University of Delhi, under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme has successfully organized an International Webinar on “Environment, Gender and Climate Change” on July 28, 2020 at 6PM IST. On the occasion of the Webinar, the Convener, Dr. Pratima Rani Sardar and the Organizing Secretaries Dr. Anuradha Mal and Dr. Chirashree Ghosh of the International Webinar came up with a Handbook on environment and gender which has been highly appreciated and liked by all for its academic focus as well as environmental concerns.

The Principal, Shivaji College, Dr. Shiv Kumar Sahdev, welcomed all dignitaries, speakers, faculties, students and participants of the Webinar and released the handbook on Environment Gender and Climate Change. He reiterated on this occasion that “Environmental and gender issues are a very significant aspect of today’s cultural and socio-political set up of the world as sustainability of humankind is only possible if we take these concerns into consideration in all our policy making and their implementations as well as in every smaller facet of our daily lives. So it is pertinent that these issues find manifestation not only in the academic arena of our existence but in the social and emotional consciousness of humankind.” This Webinar has been academically very stimulating to the participants and not only has been a great help in furthering their research, but also is a significant step towards environmental sustainability and gender equity.

Dr. Darshan Mallik, the Coordinator of the DBT Star College Scheme, Shivaji College also highlighted in the book how the “issues of climate and gender have been dealt with in the Handbook from a fresher perspective to deal with the environmental crisis before it reaches an irreversible state”. The Speakers are respected dignitaries from across the world – Professor Greta Gaard is from the Department of English at University of Wisconsin-River Falls, US, and her brilliant rendition of the talk “Climate Science, Narratives and Affects” thrilled the participants during the webinar and enlightened them on various perspectives of climate issues along with environment. Professor Vandana Singh is from the Department of Physics, Framingham State University, USA. She talked on "The End of the Future: The Climate Crisis and Justice for All". Professor Vandana Singh in the year 2014 visited the Alaskan Arctic; and there she observed “the impacts of the vanishing sea ice on the life and culture of the Inupiaq Eskimo people, and realized that justice issues must be central to understanding and teaching climate change”. Our third speaker, Dr. Vijaya Laxmi Singh from the Department of History, University of Delhi, narrated on “Gender Environment and Sustainable Development: A Historical Perspective”. She talked about Chipko Movement in detail during the webinar.

Department of Botany, Shivaji College, University of Delhi, under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme successfully organized Online Summer Training Internship on “Tools and Techniques in Plant Sciences: Morphology to Metabolome” from July 6 to 31st July 2020. The Program Coordinator, Dr. Pratima Rani Sardar and Organizing Secretary, Dr. Anuradha Mal along with other Resource Persons conducted this Summer Internship for four weeks. The Principal, Shivaji College, welcome all the dignitaries, faculties, students and participants during the Inauguration of this training program.

The Annual Fest “Juniper” 2020 on online platforms with the following events:

A 10-day long Quarantine Quiz on the Instagram Page, @fragrance_shivajicollege, was conducted from March 25, 2020 to April 5, 2020. Every day, a new question pertaining to the plant sciences was put up as a story and students replied to the questions via Direct Message.

A Webinar was held on “Food & Lifestyle to Boost Immunity” by Dr. Shantala Priyadarshini on April 24, 2020, at 11:00 AM. The objective of the webinar was to help everybody gain reliable knowledge, do’s and don’ts, and methods of boosting health in the time of pandemic by simply working on diet and lifestyle. An Online inter-college Botanical Poster Making Competition was held on April 24, 2020. The topic was aptly, “Food & Lifestyle to Boost Immunity” An Online Botanical Meme/ Caricature Making Competition was held on April 24, 2020. The participant with the most ‘Likes’ (Instagram + Facebook) was declared the winner. Results were announced on April 26, 2020, at 12:00 noon on the social handles.

An Online Botanical Crossword Competition was held on April 24, 2020. Winners were announced on April 26, 2020, at 12:00 noon on the social handles. The puzzle, its answer key and all the checked crosswords were uploaded on our Google Drive and shared with the participants.

A webinar on “Presentation Tools” by Dr. Arun Julka was conducted on April 28, 2020, at 11:00 AM. The objective of the webinar was to provide some hands-on tips and tricks for working with MS PowerPoint to create impactful, attractive and e-learning/teaching enhancing presentations. The end of the webinar concluded the Annual Botanical Fest: “JUNIPER” 2020.

For the B.Sc. Life Science Semester IV students who have opted Botany as their Skill Enhancement Course, an educational trip was organised to the Botanical Garden of Indian Republic, Noida on March 3, 2020, as part of their curriculum.

Workshop on theme “Transition towards sustainable future: Comparative perspectives from across the globe”: Department of Botany organised a workshop for students of B.Sc. Botany Honors and B.Sc. Life Science on February 24, 2020.The theme of the workshop was “Transition towards sustainable future: Comparative perspectives from across the globe.” Resource person was Dr. Deepa Idnani, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, University of Delhi.

The Department of Botany organised a “Floristic Walk” on June 30, 2019, in the Commonwealth Games Village, Patparganj, New Delhi, where the faculty members of the Botany Department along with the officials of Commonwealth Village discussed the flora and fauna along the walk.
