English: Introduction

The Department of English at Shivaji College is one of the most popular, vibrant, and enthusiastic Departments in the college. Apart from the routine classroom teaching, the English Literary Society puts to test the skills and knowledge acquired by the students in the English class. The ELS organizes paper presentations, creatively writing competitions, poetry recitations, and quiz competitions. The ELS provides what the students want – a platform for honing and exhibiting the creativity, ingenuity, and talents of the English Honours students.

The B.A. English (Honours) is a much sought after course in the college. The faculty does not restrict itself to textbook methodology when guiding the students in completing the course. Students are taught to uncover meanings of texts from a holistic and interdisciplinary approach. To facilitate a better understanding of certain historical periods and events that form the contextual background of texts, the faculty also arranges screening of various cinematic adaptations of texts prescribed in the course or of other relevant texts. The Department also organized a two day National Seminar on “The Line that Divides: Understanding Partition from Women and/in Partition Narratives” (January 2324, 2013) to approach IndoPak partition narratives through multidimensional perspectives.

Over the past few years the Department of English has nurtured the finest batches of students who have managed to secure a reputable place for the Department of English in the University.
