Shivaji College, a constituent College of the University of Delhi, is run under the trusteeship of Delhi Administration. it is a co-educational institution and imparts instruction in various subjects at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
The College was founded in 1961 by the renowned social activist and farmer-leader, Honourable Dr. Panjab Rao Deshmukh, then Union Minister for Agriculture, to meet the needs and ideals of higher education in a predominantly agrarian area. Till some years after its inception, the college functioned from a temporary building in village Matiala. It was taken over by the Delhi Government, and relocated to Karampura, in 1967. The college finally shifted to its present location 1976.
Since its inception in a small structure in rural Delhi with borrowed science laboratories, the College has come a long way in 2015 with a campus spread over an area of 10 acres, used for academic purposes, residential complex and sports ground. The total built area of the teaching and administrative blocks in 10,002 sq. metres. There are 46 lecture rooms, most of which have multimedia projection facilities. In addition, there are 6 tutorial rooms and 14 science laboratories. 1 museum and 4 research project rooms. There are 4 computer laboratories with all the required software.
The centrally air conditioned auditorium of the college has state of the art multi-media facilities and has seating capacity of 250 persons. The entire campus is a Wi-Fi enabled zone.
Shivaji College is a leading institute in West Delhi which offers 20 undergraduate courses in Science, Humanities and Commerce. It also offers 1 self-financing undergraduate course in B.A (Honours) Business Economics and 3 post graduate courses.
Shivaji College’s rigorous pursuit of academic excellence, co-curricular activities, it’s hardworking and illustrious faculty and verdant campus has attracted students in large numbers. The prime location of the college on Ring Road and the Delhi Metro route has also made it accessible for those students who live in far flung areas. Situated in the green belt of Raja Garden, West Delhi, it has a vast, well maintained and environment-friendly campus. The main college building consists of spacious, ventilated classrooms and corridors leading to the library, the auditorium, and laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Biochemistry, Biology and Computer Science. All the laboratories are equipped with state of art technological apparatuses to assist students in their experiments, practical programming and research. Our sports ground has set a very high benchmark in terms of its excellent facilities and maintenance. Over the years, students have excelled in the academic field by obtaining top or near-top positions in various University examinations.
A number of the senior faculty members are supervising Ph.D. scholars registered with University of Delhi as well as other universities. Many of them are working on UGC-sponsored major and minor research projects and on University sponsored Innovation Projects. Students are also engaged as young researchers in the University of Delhi sponsored Innovation Projects.
The air-conditioned college library offers students the most relevant academic materials from its collection of over 1,00,000 books, as well as exposure to national and international journals, periodicals, magazines and newspapers. OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) and information Kiosk also enable them to browse through the library database in a more efficient and precise manner.
The college completed fifty years of its existence in 2011-12. The Golden Jubilee year was marked by a series of academic, extra-curricular and cultural activities. The most outstanding among these activities was the International Conference on “Science, Spirituality and Humanity. Transcending Discipline Barriers” which was attended by renowned scholars from 18 countries. It was organized from 17th-19th February, 2011 in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy, University of Delhi, and the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. The first ever International Conference organized by Women Development Cell (WDC) on “Empowerment of Women in the Developing World” was held on 1st & 2nd April, 2013 in collaboration with Women’s Studies and Development Centre (WSDC), University of Delhi and NIDM. The college has instituted the Jijabai Women Achievers Annual Award with the objective of felicitating women of determination and perseverance, from all walks of life.
